Two terrorists opened fire on a crowd gathered for a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens more in what authorities quickly labeled a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.
The attackers, described in reports as a father and son, positioned themselves on a footbridge overlooking the event and unleashed a barrage of shots. Witnesses heard more than 30 rounds fired. One gunman was killed at the scene, while the other was taken into custody in critical condition. Police also discovered an improvised explosive device nearby, which bomb specialists removed safely.
This bloodshed comes despite Australia’s long-standing reputation for some of the world’s toughest firearm restrictions. After the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, the government banned rapid-fire rifles and shotguns, tightened licensing, and launched a massive buyback that removed around one million guns from circulation. “Rapid-fire rifles and shotguns were banned, gun owner licensing was tightened and remaining firearms were registered to uniform national standards.”

Reports note that the total number of firearms in Australia has climbed back to over four million—higher than before the reforms in some estimates.
Gun control advocates in the United States have long pointed to Australia as proof that strict laws end mass killings. Former President Barack Obama called it a model, and others claimed the changes had eliminated such tragedies.
The reality on Bondi Beach tells a different story. Determined evil finds ways around laws, especially when black markets and illegal imports fill the gaps. A brave bystander even tackled one of the gunmen and disarmed him, likely saving more lives—an act of individual courage that no regulation can mandate.
