Xavier Becerra Meta

Grieving California Parents Lambast Xavier Becerra While Exposing the Rot at the Heart of Big Tech’s Grip on Politics

by Candace O'Donnell
May 21, 2026

California’s Democratic frontrunner for governor, Xavier Becerra, finds himself under fire from parents who have buried children damaged by the very platforms now funneling cash into his orbit. Meta’s decision to pour nearly $1 million into an independent expenditure committee backing Becerra’s bid has ignited outrage among families who know firsthand the deadly cost of social media addiction.

These are not abstract policy disputes. They are parents like Julianna Arnold, whose 17-year-old daughter Coco met a predator on Instagram, received a fentanyl-laced pill, and died. Or Victoria Hinks, whose once joyful 16-year-old Alexandra spiraled into depression and suicide after relentless exposure to content that normalized self-harm and eating disorders. Both women see Meta’s donation as proof that Becerra cannot be trusted to confront the industry destroying the next generation.

“Why is he going to align himself with a company proven in a court of law to have hurt kids, profited off of it, and then lied about it?” Arnold asked pointedly. Her grief has hardened into activism through Parents RISE!, a group demanding real accountability.

Hinks echoed the frustration: “They’re betting he’s going to have Zuckerberg’s back and not ours.”

A million dollars buys a lot of political influence regardless of what any politician claims, especially when they are running for their first term as governor. Even huge companies like Meta expect a return on their investment and Becerra has a history of being very “gracious” to his biggest donors.

This controversy lands as California prepares its own lawsuit against Meta on behalf of children, even as juries in Los Angeles and New Mexico have already held the company liable for negligent design features — infinite scroll, autoplay, algorithmic rabbit holes — that exploit developing brains. Meta is appealing massive penalties, including a $375 million hit in New Mexico. Yet the company still flexes its financial muscle in state politics, betting that a well-placed independent expenditure can blunt regulatory zeal.

Becerra’s campaign insists it has “no control or influence” over such outside spending, a technically accurate but politically hollow claim in an era when independent PACs function as shadow campaigns. His team points to past antitrust actions against Meta during his time as attorney general and letters urging the platform to police “hate and disinformation.”

Record, however, shows the pattern: Big Tech thrives in California, and politicians who accommodate it rarely pay a price at the ballot box.

The deeper problem transcends one donation. Social media companies engineered products to maximize engagement among children, knowing full well the mental health fallout documented in internal research and now validated in court.

While left-leaning politicians rail against “Big Tech” in campaign rhetoric, their policy choices — weak age verification, resistance to parental consent laws, and cozy donor relationships — tell a different story. Parents are left to fight alone against algorithms more attentive to their children than most elected officials.

This dynamic exposes a profound contradiction in progressive governance. The same voices decrying corporate influence suddenly fall silent when the corporation in question bankrolls their preferred candidates. California families reeling from youth mental health crises, fentanyl deaths tied to online grooming, and suicides fueled by curated despair deserve leaders willing to speak truth to Silicon Valley power, not ones who cash its checks.

Becerra’s long career in public office includes time as attorney general and U.S. Health and Human Services secretary. Yet his record on protecting children from digital harms appears thinner than the rhetoric suggests.

Meanwhile, grieving mothers continue the heartbreaking work of turning personal tragedy into public warning. Their message is simple and urgent: you cannot serve both the parents burying their children and the platforms that helped put them in the ground.

As California voters weigh their choices ahead of the June primary, this episode raises uncomfortable questions about who truly holds power in the state. When Meta writes seven-figure checks for a gubernatorial hopeful, does anyone seriously believe regulatory courage will follow? The parents certainly don’t.

The families’ pain reveals what Scripture has long warned about those who prioritize profit and power over the vulnerable. As the psalmist declared, “Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked” (Psalm 82:4, KJV).

California’s next governor will face a clear choice: stand with parents fighting for their children’s minds and lives, or continue the comfortable alliance with industries that treat young souls as data points. The parents have made their position plain. The question remains whether Becerra — and the political class he represents — will listen before more graves are filled.
