And it just dilutes the message that the Democratic Party has traditionally had, that ‘we’re for the workers, we want to improve the lives of the backbone of the country.’ Now you’re into all this fringe garbage that Americans don’t want. I think that’s your posture,” O’Reilly said to Maher.
“I wouldn’t put it that way, but go ahead,” Maher replied, to the audience’s amusement.
The exchange turned sharp when O’Reilly urged Maher to “rethink” his phrasing, prompting Maher to fire back with a jab about O’Reilly’s career.
“Okay, but you might want to rethink, if that’s a good way to put it,” O’Reilly said.
“Well, I’m still on the air and you’re not, but go ahead,” Maher retorted.
American historian and conservative political commentator Victor Davis Hanson previously argued the Democratic Party’s embrace of socialist figures like Mamdani marks an ideological break from its traditional roots. He said progressives such as Mamdani and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez promote policies that punish initiative and promote dependency on government, a shift which risks alienating middle-class voters who once defined the party’s base.
Political analyst Matt Towery said Friday that Republicans are struggling to respond to that transformation. He pointed to weak GOP turnout in recent elections, including two statewide losses in Georgia, as evidence the party is losing ground while Democrats consolidate under their new identity.
