What We Know So Far About the Terrorist Attack Against West Virginia National Guardsmen

In the heart of the nation’s capital, just two blocks from the iconic White House, a moment of routine vigilance turned into a scene of shocking violence on the eve of Thanksgiving. Two young members of the West Virginia National Guard—Andrew Wolfe, 24, and Sarah Beckstrom, 20—were ambushed in a brazen daylight shooting that has left the country reeling.

Described by officials as a “targeted” and “premeditated” assault, the incident has ignited fierce debates over national security, immigration policy, and the role of the military in domestic operations. As the victims fight for their lives in separate hospitals, the suspect—a 29-year-old Afghan national with a complex history tied to U.S. intelligence—remains in custody, wounded and facing potential terrorism charges.

The attack occurred around 3 p.m. on November 26, 2025, near the Farragut West Metro station in downtown Washington, D.C.—a bustling area teeming with commuters, office workers, and tourists preparing for the holiday. Wolfe and Beckstrom, both uniformed Guardsmen, were part of a larger contingent deployed to the capital for enhanced security operations. They had been sworn into active duty less than 24 hours earlier, volunteering to cover shifts so fellow service members could spend Thanksgiving with their families.

According to eyewitness accounts and official reconstructions, the Guardsmen were patrolling near a bus stop when the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, emerged from around a corner. Armed with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, Lakanwal opened fire without warning, striking Wolfe twice—once to bring him down and again as he lay vulnerable on the ground. Beckstrom was hit multiple times in the ensuing chaos. Shattered glass from the bus stop shelter littered the pavement, and panicked pedestrians scattered as gunfire echoed through the streets.

The terrorist attack lasted mere seconds but felt eternal to those present. Michael Ryan, a local resident who witnessed the horror, described hearing the initial shots before rushing to aid one of the victims. “I saw a Guardsman on the ground getting CPR,” Ryan told reporters. “It was like something out of a nightmare—right in broad daylight, so close to the symbols of our government.”

In a testament to their training and camaraderie, nearby West Virginia National Guardsmen sprang into action. They returned fire, striking Lakanwal four times and subduing him on the spot. “Swift action by courageous fellow Guardsmen neutralized the assailant and saved lives,” said Maj. Gen. Tim Seward, adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard. The suspect was taken into custody and rushed to a hospital in critical condition, where he remains under heavy guard.

The White House was briefly placed on lockdown, and the Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ground stop at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, halting flights for safety as helicopters swarmed the airspace. By evening, the scene was secured, but the emotional toll was immediate and profound.

The Victims: Young Patriots in Service

Andrew Wolfe and Sarah Beckstrom embody the selflessness of America’s citizen-soldiers. Both hailing from small-town West Virginia, they joined the National Guard as a way to serve their country while pursuing civilian lives. Wolfe, a 24-year-old father of two from Huntington, had recently completed advanced training and was known among his unit for his steady demeanor and quick wit. Beckstrom, just 20 and from Beckley, was a college student studying nursing, driven by a family legacy of military service—her father was a veteran of the Iraq War.

Their deployment to D.C. was part of a broader mission: bolstering security amid rising concerns over urban unrest and holiday threats. “They volunteered so others could be home,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi, her voice breaking during a Fox News interview. “Now their families are in hospital rooms, fighting for them.”

As of Thursday morning, both remained in critical but stable condition, with doctors cautiously optimistic about their recovery. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, who initially reported their deaths in a tragic error later corrected, has mobilized state resources to support their families.

The Suspect: A Shadowy Past and a Cross-Country Plot

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, cuts a figure as enigmatic as he is alarming. A resident of Bellingham, Washington, with a wife and five children, Lakanwal entered the U.S. in September 2021 under the Operation Allies Welcome program for Afghan evacuees following the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Kabul. He applied for and received asylum in early 2025, granted by the Trump administration.

What elevates Lakanwal’s profile is his prior collaboration with U.S. intelligence. The CIA confirmed he had worked with CIA-backed military units in Afghanistan, providing logistical support during the war. No criminal history was known stateside, but investigators now believe he drove over 2,700 miles from Washington state to D.C. with a deliberate plan to target military personnel.

“He came with the intended purpose of conducting this brazen and targeted assault,” said U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro during a tense press conference.

Federal authorities executed search warrants at Lakanwal’s home and a related site in San Diego. The FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, is investigating the shooting as a possible act of domestic terrorism, with charges potentially escalating to first-degree murder if the victims succumb.

Official Response: From Chaos to Condemnation

The immediate response was swift and coordinated. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, flanked by Patel and Metropolitan Police Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll, labeled it an “ambush-style targeted attack” at a briefing, emphasizing the Guardsmen’s role in public safety. The Joint Task Force-DC, overseeing the Guard’s mission, confirmed “several” members were involved and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement.

President Donald Trump condemned the shooting in a prerecorded video as “an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror.” He directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to request 500 additional National Guard troops for D.C., vowing to “redouble efforts to deport migrants” and scrutinize Afghan evacuees. Hegseth echoed the sentiment: “We will never back down. We will secure our capital.”

Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) captured the sentiment on X: “Please join me in continuing to pray… These young men and women put themselves in harm’s way to protect us.”

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb condemned the attack: “The National Guard are volunteers… This is a heartbreaking day.” Afghan Evac President Shawn VanDiver cautioned against broad-brush backlash: “Deeply saddened… but it must not be used to target Afghan immigrants.”

Political and Social Ripples: Outrage, Accusations, and Media Firestorm

A media controversy erupted when an MSNBC journalist was accused of “defending” the shooter by contextualizing his refugee status, drawing swift backlash.

New York City officials, eyeing their Thanksgiving parade, monitored for copycats, with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noting a “growing trend” of attacks on uniformed personnel. Representative Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) demanded accountability from transit authorities: “The attack underscores the need for greater safety measures.”

Looking Ahead: Justice, Healing, and Hard Questions

As Thanksgiving dawns under a cloud of sorrow, the nation grapples with profound questions. Will the additional 500 Guardsmen fortify D.C.? How will federal probes into Lakanwal’s radicalization—potentially linked to post-withdrawal grievances—unfold? And in an era of polarized discourse, can unity prevail over division?

For now, prayers dominate. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, who visited the wounded Guardsmen, called the incident “horrific” and reaffirmed support. West Virginia Senator Tom Willis posted: “We are praying relentlessly for the WV Guardsmen and the families.”

Wolfe and Beckstrom’s fight continues, a stark reminder of the sacrifices behind the uniform. In their resilience lies hope that from this ambush, America might emerge stronger—united against violence, vigilant in gratitude. Godspeed to the fallen warriors; may justice be as swift as the Guardsmen’s valor.

Three Reasons a Coffee Gift Set From This Christian Company Is Perfect for Christmas

Promised Grounds Gift Pack

When you’re searching for a Christmas gift that’s meaningful, useful, and rooted in faith, you don’t want to settle for anything generic. This season is filled with noise — mass-produced products, last-minute picks, and trends that fade as quickly as they appear. But one gift stands apart because it blends genuine quality with a message that matters: a coffee gift set from Promised Grounds Coffee.

This small Christian-owned company has become a favorite among believers who want to support faith-driven businesses while giving friends and family something they’ll actually enjoy. Here are three reasons a Promised Grounds Coffee gift set may be the most thoughtful and impactful present you give this year.

1. It’s Truly Delicious Coffee

Too many “gift-worthy” coffees look beautiful in the package but disappoint when the cup is poured. Promised Grounds takes the opposite approach — exceptional taste first, thoughtful presentation second.

Their beans are sourced with care, roasted in small batches, and crafted to bring out a rich, smooth flavor profile that appeals to both casual drinkers and true coffee lovers. Whether someone enjoys bold, dark roasts or lighter, more delicate blends, every sip reflects quality that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the biggest specialty brands.

Simply put: this coffee is good. Really good. Some say it’s absolutely fantastic. If you want a gift that won’t be re-gifted, ignored, or shoved in a cabinet, this is it.

2. It Spreads the Word While Serving a Real Purpose

There are many Christian gifts that are meaningful… but not exactly practical. There are also useful gifts that have nothing to do with faith. Promised Grounds Coffee bridges both worlds beautifully.

Each gift set delivers an encouraging, faith-centered message through its packaging and presentation — a simple but powerful reminder of God’s goodness during the Christmas season. The cups are especially popular and serve as a daily reminder of the blessings from our Lord. At the same time, the product itself is something people will actually use and appreciate every single day.

It’s a gift that uplifts the spirit and fills the mug. A gift that points loved ones toward Scripture while still being part of the normal rhythm of life. And in a culture that increasingly pushes faith to the margins, giving a gift that quietly but confidently honors Christ can make a deeper impact than you might expect.

3. It’s Affordable, Valuable, and Elegantly Presented

Many people want to give something meaningful without breaking their Christmas budget. Promised Grounds Coffee strikes that perfect balance — the sets look and feel premium, but the price remains accessible.

The packaging is classy, clean, and gift-ready, making it ideal for:

  • Family members of all ages
  • Co-workers or employees
  • Church friends or small-group leaders
  • Hosts, neighbors, and last-minute gift needs

It’s the kind of gift that feels more expensive than it is — and more thoughtful than most of what you’ll find on store shelves.

The Perfect Blend of Faith, Flavor, and Christmas Cheer

A coffee gift set from Promised Grounds Coffee checks every box: a gift that tastes amazing, conveys your faith, supports a Christian business, and brings daily enjoyment to the person who receives it. In a season when so many gifts are forgotten, this one stands out for all the right reasons.

If you want a Christmas present that reflects your values and delivers genuine joy, Promised Grounds Coffee is the perfect place to start.
