Texas House Redistricting Committee Approves the Proposed Maps That Grows GOP Districts by Five

Texas and America inched closer to redistricting the state to benefit the Republican Party on Saturday.

According to Eric Daugherty, “The Texas House Redistricting Committee JUST PASSED the new map that adds up to 5 Republican U.S. House seats for 2026.”

The move, promoted by Governor Greg Abbott at the behest of the Trump Administration, would give the GOP a head start on retaining control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections.

Democrats have threatened everything they can, from breaking quorum to filing lawsuits. But the Supreme Court has already ruled in 2019 that states can redistrict for political reasons. As for breaking quorum, in which Democrats would walk off the floor to prevent enough members to allow a vote, Attorney General Ken Paxton has warned of consequences.

“My office stands ready to assist local, state, and federal authorities in hunting down and compelling the attendance of anyone who abandons their office and their constituents for cheap political theater,” Paxton said.

The only viable, albeit unlikely, path for Democrats to stop the move is to claim the redistricting is being done based on race. According to Texas Tribune:

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that states can draw electoral maps on partisan grounds.

But under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the map cannot diminish the voting power of people of color. At Friday’s hearing, Democrats argued that the proposed map unconstitutionally packed voters of color into some districts while spreading them throughout others to reduce their ability to elect their preferred candidates.

Republican state house member Brian Harrison called into Steve Bannon’s War Room to break down what happened.
