Tensions boiled over outside Portland’s ICE building late Thursday night when police detained independent reporter Nick Sortor during a confrontation with protesters. Sortor, known for his on-the-ground coverage of stories often overlooked by mainstream outlets, found himself in handcuffs after what witnesses described as a defensive response to an attack.
One observer, C.K. Bouferrache, who goes by Honeybadgermom on X, captured the confusion in real time: “Looked like @nicksortor got jumped. We are on the lower roof at ICE but difficult to tell exactly what happened at this distance. Portland liaison officers stand nearby and watch.”

Bouferrache didn’t hold back in her follow-up assessment: “I cannot believe they arrested this guy for defending himself. The woman that went after him has taken part in a few assaults this last week.”

Video footage shared by X user Mark Wilson showed officers leading Sortor away, with Wilson noting: “Portland PD arrested @nicksortor tonight. Unclear why, as he wasn’t doing anything criminal. This comes after Portland police refused to arrest the lady who assaulted @KatieDaviscourt.”
Just days earlier, reporter Katie Daviscourt suffered a brutal hit to the face from a flagpole-wielding assailant during similar protests, yet no arrest followed despite clear evidence. Portland officials cited safety concerns for not pursuing the attacker immediately, leaving many to accuse Portland law enforcement of being “woke.”
Sortor had been actively posting from the scene earlier that evening, documenting a show of support for ICE agents amid the backlash. He wrote: “PATRIOTS have shown up outside the Portland ICE facility, holding up a sign saying ‘Thank you for your dedication & hard work!’ ‘We appreciate you!’ And of course, Antifa clowns are MELTING DOWN over it, yelling at them.”

Sortor also celebrated federal agents’ swift action against rule-breakers: “FAFO ALERT: A degenerate leftist just jumped onto federal property at the Portland ICE facility and CHALLENGED agents to ‘do something about it’ And they DID — QUICKLY Dude ended up on the pavement, arrested, and dragged into the facility Beautiful.”

The Portland Police Bureau later clarified that three people were booked into jail on charges of Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree following multiple fights at the protest: Angela Davis, 49, of Vernonia, Oregon; Nicholas Sortor, 27, of Washington, DC; and Son Mi Yi, 43, of Portland.
This arrest unfolds against a backdrop of intensified federal involvement in Portland, where protests at the ICE site have persisted for months. DHS officials have condemned the violence, pointing to a 1000% increase in assaults on ICE personnel and vowing not to back down. With local police often criticized for limited engagement—sometimes attributed to city directives—calls grow louder for national intervention to reclaim control from the chaos. Sortor’s detention serves as a stark reminder of the risks journalists face in these zones, where covering the story can quickly turn into becoming part of it.
